Receiving Saunas & Hot Tubs:
Unless otherwise specified, all saunas and hot tubs are shipped in secure crates to your property where your driveway meets the road, or to a local depot to be picked up by the customer upon request.
For hot tubs and smaller 6-7’ foot saunas, the truck driver may use a lift gate to remove the crate from the truck. For larger 8-10’ saunas, customers are responsible for opening and unloading the crate by hand. This can be done in 20-30 minutes and will require a drill with a #8 Robertson bit.
For pre-assembled saunas and hot tubs, shipping costs may be up to 3x the shipping cost of the unassembled kit.
In some areas tail gate lift trucks are limited or unavailable. In this case, and for larger units, you will need to either remove the pieces off the pallet by hand (driver will usually give you a hand). Crates and pallets may be removed with a forklift or skid steer sourced by the customer.
If a larger crane is required to lift the unit to a specific location on the property, this is the responsibility of the customer to organize.
If you would like to pick up the crate at a local depot, please indicate in the “Notes” when placing the order. Storage fees may apply if there are delays in the customer retrieving the item from the local delivery terminal.
Please note, any unforeseen freight and storage fees are to be paid by the customer.
Damages:
Please inspect the packaging of your item(s) when they arrive, if you notice any damage you should make note of it when signing for delivery, or do not agree to accept the delivery.
If the unit is signed for without inspection or notation, you are accepting the delivery of the package in good condition. We cannot process an insurance claim with the freight company if the unit is signed for (which means you received it in good condition).
If you do accept delivery you are required to immediately take photos using your smartphone or camera of any damaged packaging or products inside the packaging within 48 hours. Please send photos and details to shipping@mybackyardlodge.com.
> Are there any dangers associated with using saunas?
There are a few dangers associated with using saunas, the most common of which is dehydration. When you’re exposed to high temperatures in a sauna, your body sweats to cool down. This sweating can result in loss of water and minerals, which can lead to dehydration if it’s not replaced.
Other potential dangers associated with saunas include heat stroke and heart attack. These are both severe but rare conditions that can occur if you’re exposed to high temperatures for an extended period of time. If you have heart disease or circulation issues, please consult a physician prior to sauna use.
> Should I use my sauna on an empty stomach?
You should not have a completely empty stomach, nor should you use your sauna with a full stomach. Please allow yourself to digest before using your sauna.
> How can the sauna space be kept clean?
We advise against using a water hose. When water is sprayed, the water will stay in the sauna. Use a mop and a sauna-specific disinfectant whenever possible. Sauna mats made of plastic or wood can be cleaned in the same way.
Use paraffin oil to stop the wood in the sauna from decaying. It should be used at least once a year to avoid humidity.
> How long will the heating process take?
In general, it depends on the place where you live (maybe hot or cold). The temperature in the area around the sauna affects how long it takes to heat up. Give your outdoor sauna a bit more time to warm up if you reside in a northern region, have an outdoor sauna, and it’s the dead of winter. Additionally, the heat-up time will be influenced by how hot or burning a person prefers their sauna to be. The sauna will, however, generally reach 165°F in 30–40 minutes and 190°F in less than an hour, and cedar wood heats up more quickly than other types of wood.
> How should I care for the sauna’s exterior?
It is wonderful if you are using red cedar since it doesn’t require any treatment. If left untreated, the wood will eventually turn silvery from the action of the sun and rain without harming the wood itself. To preserve the sauna’s deep, natural color, you should use a UV-inhibited stain on the exterior to protect it from the damaging effects of rain and sunlight.
> How should I maintain my sauna’s interior?
You will want to wipe the interior of your sauna with a microfiber towel or damp cloth after every 1-2 uses, or once a week. A broom can be used to sweep any debris from the floor while the sauna is cool and dry.
For a deeper clean, warm water and sauna cleaner can be used with a soft bristle brush or cloth to remove any residue build up.
Keep towels on your sauna benches to reduce the accumulation of sweat and oils.
*Do NOT apply wood stain or sealant to the interior.
> What should I wear in the sauna?
To make your tissues relieve deeply, wear as little as you can, such as shorts, cotton towels, or swimsuits are a great option as well.
> How long do barrel saunas last?
A barrel sauna can last 15-20 years with proper care and maintenance.
> How often should I use my sauna?
Sauna time is wonderful. It also has incredible health advantages, such as reducing stress, increasing cardiovascular efficiency, eliminating toxins from the body, producing deeper sleep, and skin cleansing. Use your Sauna at least once a week to reap these benefits. If this is the case, you can fit three sauna sessions into one day. Try to limit your sauna time to 10 minutes per session, and allow yourself to cool off between each session.
> How do I use my sauna safely?
Unless you have an instant-heat heater, turn on your sauna heater at least 30 minutes before entering the room.
Wear a bathing suit or towel, or go naked in the Sauna.
Remove metal jewelry prior to use.
Pour 1 to 2 ladles of water over the hot sauna stones to create steam, which will aid in perspiration and regulate humidity.
Exit the Sauna after 10-30 minutes, and chill off with a cool shower.
Relax in a cold room or location for a while.
Drink lots of water and consume a small amount of sea salt to increase water absorption.
Refrain from drinking alcohol, caffeine, or sugary drinks in your sauna or prior to use as they will dehydrate you.
Always wait 5-10 minutes between sauna use and jumping into a cold-plunge, cold shower, or cold body of water. The shock between vaso-dilation to vaso-constriction can cause dizziness, and has been known to induce cardiac arrest in those with cardiovascular complications. Always talk to a physician before trying hot-cold therapy if you have a history of blood pressure or heart complications.
