Receiving Saunas & Hot Tubs:
Unless otherwise specified, all saunas and hot tubs are shipped in secure crates to your property where your driveway meets the road, or to a local depot to be picked up by the customer upon request.
For hot tubs and smaller 6-7’ foot saunas, the truck driver may use a lift gate to remove the crate from the truck. For larger 8-10’ saunas, customers are responsible for opening and unloading the crate by hand. This can be done in 20-30 minutes and will require a drill with a #8 Robertson bit.
For pre-assembled saunas and hot tubs, shipping costs may be up to 3x the shipping cost of the unassembled kit.
In some areas tail gate lift trucks are limited or unavailable. In this case, and for larger units, you will need to either remove the pieces off the pallet by hand (driver will usually give you a hand). Crates and pallets may be removed with a forklift or skid steer sourced by the customer.
If a larger crane is required to lift the unit to a specific location on the property, this is the responsibility of the customer to organize.
If you would like to pick up the crate at a local depot, please indicate in the “Notes” when placing the order. Storage fees may apply if there are delays in the customer retrieving the item from the local delivery terminal.
Please note, any unforeseen freight and storage fees are to be paid by the customer.
Damages:
Please inspect the packaging of your item(s) when they arrive, if you notice any damage you should make note of it when signing for delivery, or do not agree to accept the delivery.
If the unit is signed for without inspection or notation, you are accepting the delivery of the package in good condition. We cannot process an insurance claim with the freight company if the unit is signed for (which means you received it in good condition).
If you do accept delivery you are required to immediately take photos using your smartphone or camera of any damaged packaging or products inside the packaging within 48 hours. Please send photos and details to shipping@mybackyardlodge.com.
> What is different about Northern Lights Hot Tubs?
The most important thing to look at is materials and workmanship when investing in a hot tub. Our wooden tubs are made with 1 1/2" thick Western Red Cedar. Compare this to other companies and you will quickly see the difference in quality and workmanship. Our tubs are designed for longevity. We believe customers buy our products because they work! You won't find a TV or other gimmick devices included with our products. But you will find quality materials such as stainless-steel heaters and straps, and we back all our products with great customer servicing and technical support.
> Should I stain the inside of a wood hot tub?
You should never stain the interior with any traditional stain. However, we recommend to seal the exterior with quality sealant such as Sikkens brand.
> How long will it take to assemble my hot tub?
The tub typically takes 1-3 hours to assemble, with the seats requiring an additional 1-2 hours. The Plumbing of a tub will take an additional 3-4 hours. Typically, this is a weekend project. Time required to construct a foundation should also be budgeted. Remember, Northern Lights can ship tubs fully assembled requiring minimal additional work.
> How long will it take to heat my hot tub?
This depends on the volume of water being heated, and the power of the heater; the starting water temperature also plays a role. Typically, it takes less than 12 hours to bring the tub to full temperature with an electrical system. A wood fired Chofu system can heat a tub in as little as 2-4 hours.
> What is a safe temperature for my hot tub?
Typically, most people feel that 37 - 39 C (98 - 103 Fahrenheit) is a comfortable temperature, however, we recommend you contact your doctor to determine if a hot tub is safe for your given health condition.
> My tub gets full of foam, especially when the pump is on high.
Laundry detergent residue found on bathing clothes will cause bubbles to be formed. Adding a chemical called foam inhibitor will get rid of this problem.
> My dispenser ran out of Bromine sanitizer and the water is murkey.
If it is caught soon enough, Spa Shock can often revive the water. Spa shock is a high concentration of chlorine free sanitizer that instantly boosts the level. One should wait at least one hour before entering the tub after it has been shocked. If it is too cloudy it is best to drain the tub and add fresh water. A weekly inspection of the puck dispenser will eliminate running out of chlorine.
> What is the air vent for?
The air vent adds bubbles to the jets giving a more intense massage. However, because it adds cold air to the water, it should be shut off when the tub is not being used.
> What is the difference between plastic tubs and your cedar hot tub?
Experience! Our tubs are 43" deep, providing a unique soaking effect that is not available in shallow plastic spas. The aromatic smell of cedar coupled with the relaxing soak, and therapeutic massage provides a unique experience.
> Is a wood tub hard to clean?
Cedar is in fact naturally resilient to decay. Its rich oils give cedar the lifespan it is famous for. Cleaning is the same as most plastic tubs. Typically, a light scrub brush with a diluted solution of liquid bleach works well.
> Is your cedar hervested using environmentally sustainable practices?
Yes, we are very serious about offering a product that is made from a renewable resource. Unlike plastic tubs that are made from petroleum by products, the wood we purchase is harvest directly by a Certified Sustainable forestry mill. The cedar trees have been approved for Sustainable Forestry Initiative SFI since 2001. This Mill has also been audited and approved by KPMG performance registrar. Sustainable Forestry Initiative is an international standard for certification of forestland. It is a comprehensive system of principles, objectives and performance measures developed by scientists. For more information, please visit www.aboutSFI.org and www.certificationcanada.org to get a better overview of the practice of sustainable forestry management.
> What do I need to do for a foundation?
A level surface using gravel and patio blocks is sufficient. The area of this pad depends on the size of the tub. We do not recommend placing a tub directly on a deck without consulting a structural carpenter to make sure the deck is properly reinforced to withstand such a weight load. Minimum size: Small - 4 1/2' x 4 1/2'; Medium - 5 1/2' x 5 1/2'; Large - 6'x6'; X-large - 7'x7'
> What is the size and weight of the hot tub for shipping?
In the kit form (unassembled) the pallet weight and dimensions will be approx:
- Package#1 (small 4'8") 60"x60" x32" weighing 500lbs
- Package#2 (medium 5'5") 67"x67"x32" weighing 600lbs
- Package#3 (large 6'2")76"x76"x32" weighing 700lbs
- Package #4(X-large 7') 86"x86"x32" weighing 800lbs
- Sauna Package 86"x95"x38" weighing 900lbs
> How is my tub shipped?
Whether you have selected the preassembled option or the kit form, you tub will arrive securely wrapped on a pallet. Most customers will opt for residential delivery which means a carrier will bring the tub to your house. In this case the local carrier will contact you to arrange a suitable time for delivery. They will make every effort to unload the tub at the point of driveway or curb side. They will also attempt to have tailgate delivery arranged to assist in unloading the hot tub. In some areas tail gate lift trucks are limited or unavailable. In this case you will need to either remove the pieces off the pallet by hand (driver will usually give you a hand). If the tub is pre-assembled, you will need to gather a few friends or neighbors to assist. Note for insurance reasons, the carrier will not position the tub to its final site, only as far as a safe drop of spot.
> For a wood fired system, how do you keep the water from freezing in the winter time?
A wood fired hot tub is to drain it after use. It can not be left filled in freezing conditions, unless an auxiliary circulating pump and a 1.5kW heater is used in conjunction with the wood heater.
> Can I use any chemical for sanitation?
No, wood is different than plastic and reacts differently to certain chemicals. The use of standard Chlorine commonly used in pools and some spas can actually damage the wood fibers over time. Our sanitization system uses bromine salts accompanied with other natural products that we consider "safe for wooden hot tub”.
> Do you offer a chemical free sanitizing option?
This is a very common question given the natural properties of our tubs. By law, the FDA only approves chlorine or bromine as a sanitizer. However, there are two other natural oxidizing systems that we recommend. By using any one of these systems, the amount of sanitizer can greatly be reduced. The 1st is an ozonator that uses UV light to produce naturally occurring ozone. Ozone leaves nothing but pure oxygen when consumed. It is 1000 times stronger than chlorine in oxidizing, however it has a very short life and dissipates quickly. The other system is a mineral ionizer, this uses natural minerals such as silver and zinc to kill bacteria and algae. When you use these systems you greatly reduce the need for bromine or chlorine sanitization. When you use both you can virtually eliminate the need for chemicals, however the FDA has not yet recognized these and as such small amounts of sanitizer should still be used.
> What type of wiring do I need for my hot tub?
Northern Lights' hot tubs don't have huge motors, so the amperage is more suited to existing panels. A direct wired 40-amp GFI (ground fault interrupted) breaker circuit is required although the system will run on 30-amp GFI if needed. #8, 3 conductor wire should be used. Consult and electrician to verify this is with in your local codes.
